Finally a FAST, EASY and SIMPLE way for Australian Primary Care Practitioners to:
Impossible? Not if you’ve seen the results of the many practitioners who have put this tool into practice, not to mention the thousands of relieved patients whose lives have been transformed. |
Dear GPs, Clinical Psychologists, Mental Health Nurses and Practice Managers
Are you sick and tired of feeling overwhelmed by paperwork, ridiculously short consultations and the pressure to see and treat more patients? Do you feel like you're coping rather than doing the kind of job you'd love to do, if you just had more time?
Mental health is in crisis - one in four Australians has a diagnosable mental health disorder. Unfortunately, we are undermanned to handle the situation. There are just too few practitioners to provide the optimal level of care. Not only that, but the business of running a practice is getting harder and harder. And when the current health system is so heavily biased toward treatment of physical health, you are really up against it. The truth is you're doing your best with what you've got, you're just overloaded.
Clearly, the status quo is just not working. Are the systems we use today (such as the overly-simplistic paper-based mental health Outcome Tools) really helping us? Or are they actually costing us – in terms of time, money and results? Consider this:
• Most mental health patients have a complex mix of pyschiatric disorders with co-morbid conditions, often layered on physical symptoms. Single disorder tests, such as the Beck’s Depression or Kessler tests, were never designed for multiple disorder use. Until now, there was no Outcome Tool that simultaneously assessed the patient for all the essential DSM-IV disorders.
• In the short timeframe you have with your patients it is impossible to do an in-depth clinical interview as well as manually complete a Care Plan. Collecting and updating patient information is too manually intensive and takes up too much precious face-to-face time.
• Full and complete Care Plans are required in order to access Medicare rebate item numbers 2710 and 2712. If you’re not completing your Care Plans to the Government's satisfaction then you run the risk of failing a Government Medicare audit.
• Lack of medication compliance and failing to attend follow up appointments are two of the biggest concerns we face in mental health because mental health is intangible and patients don’t have an objective measure of their progress. Without this it is difficult getting patient cooperation.
With all these challenges, we need to find a way to work smarter............

5,000 Patients Have Benefited from Doing the Mind Screen
- Consistent Success You Can Model!
Over 5,000 patients have used the Mind Screen including those patients previously labelled “treatment resistant”. Many have commented that in doing the Mind Screen they feel at last someone is treating them in a more scientific and personal manner. To see some patients discussing how the Mind Screen has helped them to get their lives back, click on the video below.
How Does the Mind ScreenTM Work?
Just as you refer a patient to have a blood test, you can now refer your patients to complete a Mind Screen on a computer in your practice or in the privacy of the patient's own home. The Mind Screen report remains secure and confidential and results are only available to you, the practitioner.
A self-administered outcome tool, the Mind Screen is based on a complex algorithm that draws from a pool of over 550 questions, but only asks your patient questions relevant to them. They complete it in 15-25 minutes of their own time (usually answering around 100 questions), while your time is freed up to see other patients.
The Mind Screen fits into your daily routine easily. You simply either create a Mind Screen session on your computer or you refer the patient to your receptionist who creates the Mind Screen session while you see your next patient. Some doctors request their patients complete a Mind Screen prior to their initial consult, others will recommend the Mind Screen to their patient based on what was discussed during a consultation. The approach you take is entirely up to you. When the patient completes their Mind Screen you receive an email letting you know that their Mind Screen Assessment Report and Mental Health Care Plan is available for you to review. The Mind Screen Report is comprised of three parts:
1. Get Better, More Reliable Information Via the Mind Screen Assessment Report.
1. Get Better, More Reliable Information Via the Mind Screen Assessment Report.
• Since the Mind Screen automatically assesses the essential DSM-IV mental health disorders, you get a comprehensive Assessment Report of your patient’s mental health, quickly. The report automatically considers all of the following:
|
• Mood Disorders
• Addictive Behavior Syndrome • Medication Addictions |
• Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
• Substance Related Disorders
• Anxiety |
• Psychotic Disorder
• Eating Disorders
• Patient History |
• With the Mind Screen you get more reliable information. Experience shows that patients are likely to be more candid completing a Mind Screen than they are answering questions face-to-face with their Doctor.
• The Assessment Report rates the patient’s disorders as “mild”, “moderate” or “severe”. Armed with this report you can make better informed decisions as to whether to recommend a treatment program yourself or refer the patient to a specialist.
• You can rest assured that the Mind Screen website is secure since the confidential results of the Mind Screen are only available to you, the doctor. You simply use your secure username and password to access the Practitioner section of the GeoTrustTM secured website where you can see all of your patients’ results and a host of other information.
2. Objectively Monitor Patient Progress Using the Mind Screen’s “Continuous Monitoring Graphs”.
• The Continuous Monitoring Function (CMF) makes mental health tangible since it enables you to longitudinally track the patient’s progress over time based on the treatment programme you provide.
• It enables you to compare data from previous Mind Screen sessions, and produce a written and graphical psychiatric “audit trail” of the patient’s conditions together with a record of their response to prescribed treatment and medication.
• As their doctor, you decide the extent to which the CMF is disclosed to your patient. Many doctors choose to show the CMF graphs to give the patient concrete evidence of their improvement and by educating their patients and involving them they are more likely to comply with their medication or treatment program.
3. Save Time Completing Care Plans With the Mind Screen’s “Automated Care Plan” Function.
• The Mind Screen generates an automated mental health Care Plan that sets out a framework of drop down menus to select and agree Goals and Actions with your patient. It also provides fields for you to customise Goals and Actions as you see fit.
• The Automated Care Plan function saves you a lot of admin time and effort and enables you to claim the $153.30 Medicare rebate for an Initial Care Plan (2710) and $102.20 for a Review Care Plan (2712).
• Review Mind Screen Care Plans (2712) include all the previously agreed Goals and Actions so each report builds on the other, making it easier for you to track.
• You can print or create a PDF file of the report that can be exported to your patient’s electronic file.
• It helps you to work together with your patient and their support network to achieve better health outcomes by providing evidence of the patient’s progress.
Here’s what other Doctors are saying
about the Mind ScreenTM…
"This succinct yet comprehensive outcome tool is such a valuable starting point for successful psychiatric treatment. It allows me to collect patient information quickly and get started with a Care Plan and treatment program far sooner than if I had to collect all that information in a piecemeal fashion over 4 or 5 visits. I’ve seen amazing results for my patients and my practice. I've been able to identify and successfully treat issues previously missed by other Doctors."

Before the Mind Screen I used one-dimensional paper-based outcome tools which was extremely inefficient and time consuming. Now, the Mind Screen provides me with an excellent overview of my patient’s overall mental health. I feel much more confident knowing they have been screened for the full range of DSM-IV disorders and can now make a truly informed decision on what to do next. The best part is it was so easy to put into my practice.
